Target Rounds Explained
Archery Rounds Guide
Due to the very complicated and extensive rules for different target archery rounds, I have attempted to produce explanatory guides for indoor and outdoor rounds, based on the 2 systems run by World Archery (previously FITA), and Archery GB (previously GNAS).
Similar guides are available online, but I haven’t found any that bring together all the aspects of shooting target rounds.
The aim is to encourage anyone who hasn’t already done so, to explore the many options available for shooting different rounds, and to have a go at something different!
Most people at our club tend to just shoot the indoor Portsmouth round, but there are other options for shooting during a Wednesday evening such as WA18, Vegas or Bray I rounds which fit the format of two sessions of 30 arrows.
Outdoors there are many options for target shooting, (as well as 3D, Field, and Clout type shooting), and our outdoor facilities are poorly attended compared to Wednesday evenings, so if you can make it on a Monday or Saturday afternoon, this may help you to choose your round.
I have avoided the tradition of counting arrows in dozens as I find it slightly baffling.
As far as I can tell the main reason for using dozens (apart from tradition), is because scoresheets tend to have 12 arrows per line.
Illustrations of relevant target faces and scoring zones are included.
I hope archers find these useful. They can be kept on your phone for quick reference,
and please feel free to offer any feedback, especially if I have got something wrong!
